Dearest Cat,

I wonder if I might beg of you the greatest favour? You would not credit it, but Jacob, Dotty, Emily and Izzie have gone down with the most disgusting and virulent cold imaginable. Now, I discover that Max too is complaining of a sore throat, and I am at my wit's end.

I am sending Rose to you – much against her will, I might add – but I do not want the poor girl coming down with yet another dose when it is only a sennight since she was suffering herself. If she remains here, it will be impossible to keep her from tending to the little ones, for she dotes on them so and is such a dear creature.

I beg you will forgive your big sister for being so horribly high handed, but Rose will arrive mere hours after this letter does.
